2008: Breaking cultural boundaries - She chose science courses over
******** Excerpt ********
As the only daughter, third of six children, Leticia Delgado-Herrera
spent her childhood in Mexico "enjoying doing anything my brothers did,
especially building things."
When they decided to become engineers, she wanted to become an engineer, too, but her parents vetoed her choice.
"Latin American culture is different," she said. "They said that wasn't
for a woman to do, that I needed to learn how to sew and cook. Even
though I hated cooking and sewing, I got diplomas in both subjects."
Still, Delgado-Herrera's parents paid for her college education: She majored in medicinal chemistry.
A special request to all alumni to come out and reconnect to WISE
