Tyrone Forman is a sociologist and nationally recognized voice on intergroup prejudice, discrimination, comparative race and ethnic relations, and survey research methods. As Associate Chancellor and Vice Provost for Diversity he leads the Office of Diversity, overseeing the university’s strategic efforts to advance access, equity, and inclusion as fundamental components underpinning all aspects of campus life. Professor Forman has conducted innovative studies of the ways that discrimination and constrained opportunity shape the life experiences of racial and ethnic minorities as well as the sociocultural factors that influence intergroup relations and attitudes among youth and adults. In exploring these issues, he has developed four main foci: (1) the changing nature and social consequences of intergroup prejudice and discrimination; (2) young whites’ racial attitudes in the post-civil rights era; (3) intergroup relations among people of color; and (4) health and well-being of adults and adolescents. His work has appeared in a number of leading social science journals and has been financially supported by the Russell Sage Foundation, the Fletcher Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health.
He is the recipient of several prestigious awards and fellowships, including the 2012 Oliver Cromwell Cox Best Article Award from the American Sociological Association and a 2011-12 fellowship at Stanford University's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He is Book Review Editor for the Du Bois Review: Social Science Research on Race and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior. He also serves on the Advisory Board of Phillips Academy Andover's Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT). He is a former Chair of the American Sociological Association’s Section on Racial and Ethnic Minorities.
