The Department of African American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago presents its annual Grace Holt Memorial Lecture:
Michelle Alexander, Associate Professor of Law, the Ohio State University, will discuss her book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.

Wednesday, April 27, 12:00-1:30 pm
UIC Student Center East, Cardinal Room
750 S. Halsted Street, Chicago, IL 60607

Michelle Alexander is Associate Professor of Law at the Ohio State University; she holds a joint appointment in the Moritz College of Law and the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity.  Previously she was a member of the Stanford Law School faculty, where she served as Director of the Civil Rights Clinic.  Alexander has significant experiencein civil rights advocacy and litigation, both in the private and non-profit sectors.  She served as the Director of the Racial Justice Project for the ACLU of Northern California, which spearheaded a national campaign against racial profiling by law enforcement.  As an attorney, she worked in plaintiff-side class action suits alleging race and gender discrimination and clerked for Justice Harry A. Blackmun on the United States Supreme Court.

Alexander is the author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness (The New Press, 2009), in which she argues that racial caste has not been truly obliterated, but refashioned: by targeting black men and devastating communities of color, the U.S. criminal justice system perpetuates racial control, despite its formal adherence to colorblindness.
