This course will discuss the sociocultural, political, and economic factors that shape the Black/African-American family. The course will be divided into three parts; first, students will be lead to investigate “common sense” around what it means to be Black/African-American and what we mean by “family.” Next, we will discuss and evaluate the major theories around the Black/African-American family. Finally, we will spend the rest of the semester discussing the major influences on the contemporary Black/African-American family.
